My Mentor
I chose my dad to be my mentor because he coached me all the way through little league. He hasn’t taught me about the specifics of football like my high school coaches have, but he taught me a lot of the basics and the things which began my passion for the game. I knew he would know things that I could easily get across to someone who does not have a ton of experience at the game of football.
My my dad is a hard working guy with a sense of humor and strong work ethic. He can always keep a serious environment, but never too serious. He loves to help people and tries his best to treat everyone the same, no matter who it is. He has impacted me as a student of the game by always holding me to the highest standard. He always pushes me to work harder and push the envelope a little further, just to get the best of myself. There is always something to improve on.
Throughout this experience, my dad gave me multiple tips from his little league days. Certain ways of bringing things up, or explaining something you want to get across. He told me how that when someone doesn’t really have a background in something, and they’re learning it for the first time, you have to explain why you're telling them to do what you’re telling them to do. For example, when I was helping Kaelyn with her throwing form, I told her to point her shoulder at what she was throwing at. I explained that this allowed her to use her core more instead of just her arm, and it gives a consistent aiming point every time you throw the ball. It took her a few throws, but she acknowledged that her shoulder didn’t hurt as much as it did last year from throwing (because she was using her core) and how she was throwing so much further. He also told me a few drills we used to do when I was a little league quarterback, that I implemented in the first practice with Kaelyn. Small, basic footwork drills followed up by a throw just to get you thinking of something other than throwing the ball before you do throw it, just like in a game.
Time Log: 2 full 2.5 hour practices, 30 minutes of 1 on 1 time with Kaelyn after each practice, and 3 hour game day.
