My time as a coach was not only a ton of fun, but also very insightful. It was a very small example of what coaches go through every day. Is started out a little bit awkward, not knowing all of the players and not knowing 100% who I was going to be coaching. I then met Kaelynn Glenn who I would be coaching. She had played the position in the previous years, so I knew she had a base knowledge of the position, and some of the terminology I would use. The first day I just wanted to focus on her throwing motion. She could throw a decent spiral and a decent distance. However, after I showed her a few technical thing like pointing your shoulder and stepping where you want to throw, she immediately began throwing more accurate and with more first day was all about throwing, and we comtinued to tweak small things between drills.
Going into the second day of practice, the goal was to make sure that we had all of the plays down that we would be running. With different runs and passes she needed to remember, I tried to help her by explaining what we were seeing, what we could run, and why we wanted to run that play. Personelle also played a huge role that she really began to get down by the end of the day. She would start making suggestions on what play to run, because of the defense they were in, or because of who would be getting the ball. I was very impressed by her progress and the noticeable increase in her football IQ.
The third time I got to work with Kaelynn, it was game day. I helped her warm up, and she was throwing great. I was quizzing her on plays and what she was supposed to do on every one. She rattled off the answers as fast as I could ask the questions. I would even try to trick her with a few, and she wasn’t fazed. My advice to her was to treat every play like she had in practice, and she would be fine. She went out and killed it. Less than 10 incompletions throughout the 4 games. It was awesome to be along side her for every play and talk through what had just happened after the games. I continued to throw with her on the sideline and keep her head in the game. At the end of the day, we played the sophomores to go undefeated and win the tournament. It was an awesome time to see the progress of Kaelynn from the first practice to the final game. Her throwing was better, but I also felt she had a better understanding for the game. This is exactly what I enjoyed so much about football this year. I can not take credit for all of her success, but I do think there were a couple times that I definitely helped her out. It was an awesome experience to help someone out to better understand something we both enjoy doing.
